This jellyfish is commonly found in the surface waters of coastal regions.
It is carnivorous, feeding on small prey that it catches using the long stinging tentacles around the edge of its umbrella. Its mouth, located under the umbrella, is extended by four long, scalloped lobes: its oral arms.
This jellyfish multiplies at an alarming rate in the Pacific, where it competes for food with other marine species, namely those used by fisheries.
The northern sea nettle can grow to up to 30 cm in diameter with 6 m long tentacles.
The scientific name for this jellyfish comes from Chrysaor, the god of light and son of Poseidon and Medusa. It refers to the golden rays decorating the umbrella like the warrior's golden sword.
