A DAILY COMMITMENT TO THE PLANET

A responsible company

Limiting our ecological footprint, taking action for the environment on a daily basis – the Aquarium preserves life and has a duty to set an example. That’s why the Aquarium La Rochelle is certified NF Environnement Sites de visite.

This label, issued by AFNOR Certification, rewards cultural and tourist sites that are committed to an environmental approach. Faithful to its vocation of helping people to Dream about and Understand the Sea in order to better Preserve it, the Aquarium La Rochelle has been rewarded for its 60 years of commitment to the Ocean.

Our actions and commitments

Heat pumps and solar panels

The Aquarium’s roof has been equipped with large solar panels for 14 years. The installation produces enough energy for 5 four-person households.

The site has chosen to renew its heat pumps in order to reduce the building’s energy consumption and use a gas with low toxicity and no impact on the ozone layer.

Low-impact lighting

100% of the building’s lighting is provided by low-energy bulbs and neon lights, whose switching on and off is programmed and centralized for optimum management.

Eco-responsible stationery

The Aquarium uses Imprim’ Vert-certified printers for its communication materials, to promote sustainable forest management. All printing is carried out on PEFC-certified paper from sustainably managed forests. Special attention is also paid to the office paper used internally, by selecting paper with the European Ecolabel label.

Optimized waste management

In partnership with Biotop, an eco-network based in La Rochelle, 20 waste streams are sorted for recycling, including string, plastic and pallet film.

The 2 tonnes of annual green waste from the tropical greenhouse are shredded by the Aquarium and transported to the composting unit for recycling. Biowaste is also processed for composting in partnership with the AlterGaïa Association.

Water, a precious resource

The flow rates of the Aquarium’s taps, showers and toilets are controlled. The tropical greenhouse is watered in part by rainwater harvesting. The greenhouse also features an automated irrigation system for precise watering. It is also equipped with water retaining devices in the soil.

A rational purchasing policy

L’Aquarium La Rochelle favors short-distance purchasing: 49% of its suppliers are based in New Aquitaine. Particular attention is also paid to the duration and life cycle of a product.

All the cleaning products we use are eco-labelled, and we work daily to reduce the use of chemical disinfectants. To this end, only biological control is used to maintain the plants in the tropical greenhouse. No phytosanitary products are used.

« Because there is no such thing as big and small actions for the planet. »
