Powder Blue Tang

Acanthurus leucosternon

Environment

The powder blue tang lives in the clear waters of coral reefs.

It can most often be found on their outer slopes, either alone or in a group. This very active fish swims around all day long, looking for algae to graze on. It can be aggressive toward its own species, especially to members of the same size.

Cohabitation

It may also display aggressiveness toward fish of other species but with a similar size or colouring. Like all surgeonfish, it has an erectile spine on either side of its caudal peduncle (tail), which it can use to seriously cut its adversaries.

In order to go unnoticed, this fish can change colour, becoming lighter or, conversely, almost black.
